Safety Tips

There are several things you can do to make your home safer, and an electrical check up is a good place to start.

A study done by independent insurance agents found that more than 18 million homeowners never check for electrical hazards, and 8% never change the batteries in their smoke alarms. Nearly 5% of homeowners do not have smoke detectors.

Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis; we can install a new outlet for you.

Light bulbs: Only use the size recommended for the fixture or lamp. Make sure bulbs are screwed in securely because loose bulbs may overheat.

Before you dig, call Miss Utility at 1-800-552-7001. This will prevent contact with underground power lines.

Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) at outlets near water. These outlets prevent electrocution by shutting off the current to a circuit when there is a short. These need to be near sinks, tubs or showers and can easily be installed by Genesis Electrical.

Frayed cords can cause electric shock or electrocution. Avoid running extension cords under throw rugs or carpeting.

Avoid electric shock or electrocution — stay at least 10 feet away from any downed power line that is on the ground or on top of an object.
